Trace too thick, too fast

by Anonymous

Our soap traced faster than we thought it would and didn't get to pour into molds. We had to spoon into molds and aren't really sure if we packed it in well enough. Will it still turn out, or should we re-heat and try again?

Answer:

If you could provide me with some more information like the recipe, method, extra ingredients, etc. I would be happy to try to advise you.

soap traced to fast, into lumps
by: Anonymous

First time trying cp soap, used a kit all measured out. Mixed with stick blender and it was thick trace very fast, could not even add fragrance. It was hot in the house, in Arizona, got both lye water and oils to 112'. Mixed with ss spoon then with stick blender, probably to long with blender but it was only a few minutes. Next time hope to mix til blended quick and stop. Hope I can add coloring and do swirls but who knows with this beginners kit.

Same question w/details! Help!
by: Shannon

I have the same question. I followed Marsha's tutorial on YouTube. http://youtu.be/ww7vM5hKhz4
Immediately when I added the third oil, liquid sunflower, the soap became thick & unmanageable. I was using an immersion blender and wondered if I'd just rushed it? This was my very first try, and I don't want to get discouraged. Went ahead and tried to "finish" it, put it in molds, etc. I want to try again immediately, but really will be heartbroken if it does this again?
I can post pics of my concoction!

Answer:

I previewed some of the video and noticed a couple of things. The method that she is using is very much like the room temperature method but she mentions that you can use different oils and doesn't mention the fact that you will have to run the recipe through a lye calculator to get the correct amount of lye needed for that oil combination.

Every oil requires a different amount of lye in order to saponify correctly. You CANNOT just change the oil without finding out how much lye you will now need.

Every recipe you find, whether it is in a book or on the net, should be put through a lye calculator before you use it.

I'm guessing that your soap went wrong because the recipe did not have the correct ratio of ingredients.
