Your base soap recipe....

Hi Cathy, I was just looking at your basic soap recipe and see that you put confectioner's sugar in it. Can you tell me why? I've never heard of that before and am very curious what it does to the soap.

Love your site, btw.

Answer:

Cathy,

Confectioners sugar acts the same in soap as regular sugar (it gives a boost to the lather) but unlike regular granulated sugar, it can be added directly to the soap.

Granulated sugar is added to water and heated until the crystals have dissolved. This syrup is then cooled and added in a small amount to the soap base when it has reached a light trace.

Confectioners sugar can be mixed in with the colourants or botanicals and added directly to the lightly traced soap.

There is no need to add the sugar if you don't want to...it is an optional ingredient that I sometimes like to include.

Good luck and thanks for enjoying the site,
Cathy
