Working with Lye

Hi...I am a new soapmaker. The last few times I worked with my lye, it jumps up out of the container when I open the lid. When I pour it out to measure, it is also jumping into the air a little. Can you tell me why this is happening and what to do to stop it.
I appreciate your help.
Rosanne
Answer:Hi Rosanne,
You are quite right...for some reason lye beads seem to be charged with electricity...like they have a bad case of static cling!!
In all my years of soap making I haven't come across a 'cure' for this. My solution is to make sure the area I am working in is well protected.
I lay down a fleece backed plastic table cloth that can be wiped down easily and I always wear my rubber gloves, goggles and long sleeved shirts when pouring and measuring the lye.
Once you've finished with the lye beads, give the area a good wipe down and place all utensils into the sink. Then carry on making your soap!
Good luck,
Cathy
