Working with children

Are there any soap recipes not involving lye? I teach an after school class and I have to be very careful.

Answer:

Your only option to avoid working with lye would be to use melt and pour soap. M&P (melt and pour) soap making is a great project for kids and one they usually enjoy very much.

One thing that makes it so great for kids is that the M&P soap is ready to use as soon as it is solid. You do not need to wait for the soap to cure.

You still have to be careful and provide supervision while working with the M&P soap since it is quite hot when melted but you do not need to work with lye at all. That step has been done by the M&P soap manufacturers.

Good luck,
Cathy

Alternative To Using Lye
by: Shayna

Another alternative would be to purchase handmade soap loaves that have already been sponified or oops soap bars or bar ends or handmade soap bars on sale and you could rebatch them and make soap. There are even some sellers who sell grated homemade soap to use just for this purpose. The oils and lye in all of these options have already sponified so the danger of the lye is not a danger because it's no longer harmful lye it's been changed into handmade soap! Just another alternative to consider besids melt and pour. Happy Soaping whichever you decide works for you :>)
