Why the sugar?

by Cynthia

I notice a lot of soap recipes call for a very small amount of powdered sugar...what does this do?

Answer:

Generally sugar is used to increase the lather of a soap recipe. I have used powdered sugar because it is easy to store and can be added at trace. Sugar will also speed up trace times and help to jumpstart the gel process.

Additives from the kitchen

Cathy, is there a "rule of thumb" to how much of the natural kitchen stuff you have listed you use for the soap or just kinda wing it? I am pretty new at soap making, but getting anxious to make other than just the plain ole soap :) yep getting addicted just like I was warned.
Thanks for your site!

Answer:

I don't really have a rule of thumb.

With each batch I make I add small amounts when using new ingredients. When the soap is done I will take notes about the results. This way I can repeat it for another batch if I like it or I can use the information to correct any deficiencies for next time.

Good luck,
Cathy
