Hi everyone!

I'm a soap maker from London Ont and I was wondering if anyone knew where I can purchase bulk lye in London. I noticed some previous conversation about bulk lye in London but no one mentioned the store name or location. Can someone please fill me in?

Hello all. This is my first post but I had to join the conversation. As of today December 10 2015 the Home Hardware on Colborne street west brantford carries 100% pure lye crystals (sodium hydroxide). As of 10:50am today they have 4 3kg (6.6lb) containers and 5 500g containers on the shelf.

I use this for my soap and so far so good.

My parents are both cancer survivors I have been making soap for over 6 years now and they have been using it for as long as I have been making it. I use the Lye from home hardware and always have. It doesn't matter where you get your lye there is going to be some impurities but they are minimal no matter where you buy your lye. So I chose to save myself the extra costs and just pick it up at Home Hardware because doesn't matter where you buy lye the end result is the same there will be some amount of impurities. My parents are both fine using my soaps!

Thank you for your help. I did a little research on The Home Hardware Lye crystals. The paper that comes with the product says that it contains 100% lye crystals but it also may contain up to 5% of other ingredients, but it did not note what these could be. Wanting to be a purist, as much as I can (cancer survivor and a bit paranoid :-), I checked into Canwax. They told me that their lye is 99%lye. Don't know what the other 1% is yet. I have asked them. Big price difference if you include the shipping, but health-wise, I may feel better knowing that my soap is as pure as I can get it. Anyone else having knowledge of what they add to the lye or a source for the most pure lye would be much appreciated. Thanks again.

Canwax.com sells lye for soapmaking. They will ship the 1kg lye but anything more you have to go pick up at their Huntsville location.

Annie use it, that's 100% Lye nothing else but Lye! Everyone uses it in soapmaking, it is the same type of Lye you will spend a small fortune on plus shipping from online sellers. It is Lye plain and simple and can be used in soapmaking!!!

I just bought Home Hardware Brand of Lye Crystals. They told me that it was used for outhouses. It says that it contains 100% lye crystals. Does this mean that there is anything added to it? Does anyone know if there is also aluminum in this product? Thanks.

I actually found a place in London Ontario to purchase lye in bulk you can buy 25 Kg bag or 20 Litre pail for $60.00. It's the Caustic Soda beads (Lye) in bead form and I'd like to purchase some but that's just too much to store at once. If anyone is in the Tillsonburg Ontario and surrounding areas and would like to go in on it maybe we could all pitch in and save alot of money on our lye. Just let me know and we'll go from there. I can pick it up in London easily enough but just want to see how many people would be interested in going in on it.

You can get it at any Home Hardware store.

If they don't stock it, they can order it in for you but they might ask you to buy the whole case. If you are going to buy it regularly, you can ask them to keep it stock for you.

Yes that is the one I've been using for the past 6 months since I've started making soap and who ever told you that obviously is NOT a soap maker or soap expert. It is 100% Lye Crystals which mean 100% Lye which is 100% Sodium Hydroxide. I have no idea why they would tell you not to use it but I have been and alot of other soapmakers do as well. Go ahead and buy it and try it out you'll see it makes perfect soap. My family and my friends use my soap and I even sell my soap and all I get is lots of compliments so obviously the Lye Crystals work great in soap! So let me know how your soapmaking goes and if you buy some of the crystals.

The only lye I can find at the locations we talked about is LYE CRYSTALS ,Is this product the one you use.I was told from home hardware this product should not be used.I value your comment.

David...yes I just bought some about a month ago. You could also purchase some from Sapphire Blue it's in Courtland which is about 3 minutes from Tillsonburg. Sapphire Blue is a soap supply shop and I buy alot of my soapmaking products there. The prices are very reasonable plus I don't have to pay shipping costs so saves me lots of money I just have to go pick my order up. The link to them is:

I've also googled Home Hardware Stores there in Brantford and the information for each is below you could call them and ask if any of them have Sodium Hydroxide (Lye). That way saves you from driving all around looking for it. Some are not in Brantford but may be near there.

David...I'm from Tillsonburg, Ontario, Canada and I buy my Sodium Hydroxide (Lye) from our local Home Hardware or Home Building Center. Costs $22.00 for a 3 Kg size and it lasts a good long time. Hope this helps.
