Soap Without Lye

Is it possible to make soap without using lye? Is there an alternative I can use?

Answer:

Sorry but there is no replacement for lye when it comes to making handmade soap.

There is a saying among soap makers - "No lye = No soap".

Soap is the result of a chemical reaction between a lye solution and fats/oils. Without lye you do not have soap.

Visit my Soap Making Suppliers page or the Sodium Hydroxide page for a list of suppliers.

Another option is to buy melt and pour soap or to buy pre-made soap for re-batching. This way the lye stage has already been done and all you have to do is add in your scents, colour and any other additives that you like.

Good luck,
Cathy
