Soap Making Essentials

A Rose Milk Soap Recipe.

Made using a Rose Milk Soap Recipe

This soap recipe is great because it uses inexpensive and easy to find base oils. Crisco, lard and grapeseed oils can be found in most grocery stores and produce a soap that is surprisingly hard and conditioning. Coconut milk powder adds a richness to the lather and the castor oil makes that lather bubbly.

This recipe does contain lard but if you want a vegan bar you could substitute shea butter, mango butter or palm oil (be sure to run the recipe through the lye calculator again before making).

Base Ingredients Grams Ounces Percentage
Crisco 180 gr. 6.349 oz. 20%
Coconut Oil 270 gr. 9.524 oz. 30%

Grapeseed Oil 135 gr. 4.762 oz. 15%

Distilled Water 326.07 gr. 11.502 oz.
Lye 128.661 gr. 4.538 oz.

Water as % of Oils = 36.23

For basic instructions on how to make homemade soap, read The Process page and then follow the directions below to make this Rose Milk Soap Recipe.
  • Weigh out water and remove 1/4 cup. Heat the water in the microwave and add the coconut milk powder, titanium dioxide, orris root and icing sugar. Mix well and place in a sealed jar.

  • Place the Crimson Mica (1/16), making sure all clumps are removed, in a ramikin and put aside.

  • Put a small amount of Crimson Mica in a small jar. Stretch a piece of panyhose over the top and secure with an elastic. This will allow you to sprinkle a line between the two layers. Alternatively you could use an old salt shaker.

  • Place the essential oils and Rosemary Extract into a small sealed jar.

  • Place all of the additives into the oven to keep warm.

  • Weigh out the lye and add to the remaining water. Continue the soap making process as usual until a medium trace is reached.

  • Add warmed and thoroughly combined coconut milk mixture to the medium traced soap and blend well.

  • Pour about 1/3 of the base into your prepared mold. Sprinkle a light layer of the mica mix over the molded soap. Too much and the rest of the soap will not stick.

  • Blend the Crimson Mica (1/16) and the essential oils into the main base. The base should be creamy and fairly thick by now. Pour the whole mixture gently over the soap thats already in your prepared mold.

  • Put the soap to rest as usual and cut when cooled.

  • Congradulations, Your Done!
