Soap Base

by Swati
(India)

Hi,

So good to come across your website. I had a quick question but something I've been going crazy about.

I live in india and can't find lye, sodium hydroxide and caustic soda anywhere. The 3 things that I hear make the soap base.

Is there any other way I can make a soap base?

Thank you,
Ruhani.

Answer:

Lye, sodium hydroxide and caustic soda are all the exact same thing, just different names.

Soap is the result of a chemical reaction between sodium hydroxide and fats/oils.

Unfortunately you cannot make soap without using sodium hydroxide.

Lye is also wood ash and water. I do not know the wood ash to water amount. You add the wood ash to the water and strain the wood ash from the water. Now you have lye, however, even these simple ingredients still required the same careful handling as processed lye. Important to add. I have never made soap this way, But it is the old fashioned way.
Good luck!
