Can I use lard in place of shea butter?

Answer:

You certainly can use lard instead of shea butter but you will have to run the adjusted recipe through a soap calculator to get the new amount of lye needed.

Good luck,
Cathy

Lard?
by: Anonymous

In my country, I can't find shea butter/cocoa butter. Lard is a lot but I don't want to use animal fat. Can you help me in finding other substitution for shea butter? Can I use magarine instead?

Shea Butter substitute

I would not recommend using margarine! It is a blend of many things (some not even related to fats or oils) and would not have a SAP value you could use.

Visit the Fats and Oils page and scroll down to the heading "Love that creamy lather".

You will find a list of oils and fats that can be used instead of shea butter...just remember to always run your recipe through a soap calculator every time you make changes.

Good luck,
Cathy
