My soap is a light natural tan, but has a darker brown crust...

What could have caused this? It seems to have fully saponified, and gelled. Its not a hard crust, its more like a rind.

Answer:

This neat yet unusual phenomenon is usually caused by fragrance oils that contain a vanilla component in them. The ring of darker colour is most apparent just after the bars are cut and once the cut part of the bar is exposed to oxygen, the rind like appearance disappears leaving the exterior of the bar a solid darker shade...I often wish I could keep the outside ring since it can look quite cool.
