I noticed that my clothes appeared a bit dingy using a "liquid" recipe. However, once I switched out to "dry powder", the dinginess disappeared and the recipe also seemed to work better overall. Not being a chemist, my guess is that the liquid version may cause the washing soda - borax to degrade before actual laundry usage. Hope this helps!
