How to incorporate titanium dioxide?

by Cynthia

Hello, obviously I'm relatively new to soap making... but addicted. I've tried using TD a couple times now with not much success. This last time I added 1/4tsp with the lye (38oz batch) and didn't notice much lightening. so near trace I mixed some with castor and added and that got my soap clumpy? Whats the right way to do this?

Answer:

There are two kinds of titanium dioxide. Water soluble and oil soluble. You can use either type but you will need to mix the TD with either the water or some oil (depending on which kind you have) before adding it to your soap at trace. Make sure that all clumps have been removed as well.

Another way to whiten soap is to use white mica which contains TD in it and is so much easier to mix into soap.
