Dum and Dirty in Alaska

by Joe
(BC. Alaska, Yukon area)

I have been wanting to make soap with real home-made lye, but it requires burning HARDWOOD. That's tough to find in Alaska. Why can't pine wood be used, what will happen, and is there a "North of the 48" solution for home-made lye?

Answer:

Sorry Joe but homemade lye is way beyond my realm of expertise!!

I'm aware of generally how the pioneers made lye but thats the extent of my knowledge.

Be aware that homemade lye (potassium hydroxide) makes a soft soap...for bar soap you will need to use Sodium Hydroxide.

Good luck,
Cathy
