Coloring with spices

When coloring with spices such as cinnamon, turmeric, paprika, etc, do you just add the dry spice to the soap at trace, or does it need to mixed with gycerin or something else?

Answer:

I just add a small amount at a light trace and stick blend the colour in. I've not had any trouble doing it this way.

Use a sparing hand when adding spice for colour. It can be quite abrasive on the skin even though it feels really soft on its own. Small amounts are best.

Good luck,
Cathy

Mixing spices
by: Melanie

I usually mix any powdered colourants with base oils before adding lye mixture - I find this way you can mix thoroughly and evenly without worrying about speeding up trace.

Answer:

Thanks Melanie! This method works very well if you are colouring the entire batch one colour...if you want to marble the soap you will have to leave out the colour until you've reached a light trace.
