Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide 98% w/w)

by Sarah

Hi,

I have made a batch of soap with Caustic Soda (Sodium Hydroxide 98% w/w). Is this safe to use or must it be at 100%?

Thanks,

Sarah

Answer:

Sorry Sarah but I don't recommend using the soap. You should only use 100% sodium hydroxide when making handmade soap.

Is the sodium hydroxide package a drain opener? Does it say what the 2% is? I would be afraid it's a harmful chemical that, unlike lye, will still be in the soap at the end of the soap making process.

Even though sodium hydroxide is a harmful chemical, it is used up in the chemical reaction and no longer remains in the soap when you use it.
